Die Autorin, theater performance, 2023
“Die Autorin” is a performative essay by Natalia Zaitseva that revisits the young independent performance scene in Russia from 2012 to 2022 and explores authorship, hierarchies in the art world, “level one identity art” and abstraction as a language for stage communication through performance and music scores. Central to the work are the appropriation of authorship and the binary opposition of oppressors/oppressed that reduces artists to mere instruments.
The theater performance contains pieces of female composers from an experimental collective Moscow Scratch Orchestra, that made music based on the English composer Cornelius Cardew’s theories of improvisation.
Written and staged by Natalia Zaitseva
Performer: Verena Noll
With compositions by: Asya Ashman, Alexandra Novozhenova, Anna Versotskaya
Translation of the original English text into German: Marvin Neidhardt
